Things To See And Do

Alaska's Finest Bear Viewing
Minutes away from one of Alaska's Premier Bear Viewing Areas

BearBearFew natural places in North American offer the bear viewing opportunities found at beautiful Fish Creek. The Grand View offers seasonal guided wilderness tours by bus or van. Your tour will include a drive into the vast Tongass National Forest to one of Alaska's premier bear viewing locations. This area contains one of the largest concentrations of black and grizzly bears anywhere in Alaska that gather to feed on the large run of Chum salmon as they swim upstream to spawn. In addition to bears, the area is rich in many other types of wildlife. Bald eagles are numerous. Many eagles nest in large snag trees near streams and shorelines as they wait for the scraps left by the bears. The area is also home to many other animal species such as mink, marten, wolverine, otter, beavers, marmots, wolves and mountain goat. The services of a Forest Service Naturalist are available at the bear observatory. This is an incredible experience for the nature lover and photographer. Ample time is allowed to observe the wildlife activity before the return trip. Be sure to bring extra film as the tour will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery you'll see anywhere.

Glaciers
GlacierGlacierOur area is also home to one of the largest glaciers in the world, the 400 square mile Salmon Glacier. From the Hyder area, visitors can see about 20 glaciers. A scenic 45 minute ride out of town on Highway 37A will bring visitors to Bear Glacier, one of the world's "true blue glaciers". Many world travelers have compared the beauty and grandeur of this area to the world famous Swiss Alps. Some say it's better!
